If the black-vampire-hunter-as-action-hero genre isn't exactly oversaturated, it's hardly because of the strong star turns of Wesley Snipes in the film adaptations of the popular Blade graphic novels. This sequel to the '98 original may have a plot hole (or three), but Marco Beltrami takes the baton from the original vamp-hunting thriller's Mark Isham and delivers a rousing orchestral score full of dark corners and ominous percussive thunder. While the film's strong, club-mix-heavy song score emphasizes the story's contemporary setting, Beltrami instinctively gets the tale's gothic, sword 'n' sorcery roots, punctuating his rhythmic, suspenseful score with blasts of Barbarian-friendly blasts of brass. The title track fuses the composer's dramatic instincts with the back-to-the-'70s synth-swagger of electronica artist-producer Danny Saber, while "Nomack the Knife" is anything but playful, powered by a beat-heavy symphonic wallop that just might clear the dance floor. --Jerry McCulley

The rap-rock-electronic collaboration has become a mainstay of the industry. Yet as cool as it is to hook up artists from disparate genres, sometimes these fusions look better on paper than they actually sound. Not so this project, which finds A-list rappers (Busta Rhymes, Bubba Sparxx, Rah-Digga, et al.) joining forces with topnotch electronica heavyweights like Crystal Method and Roni Size. There's much to dig here, but there are a few glaring missteps. Witness "Cowboy," in which the flamboyance of Fat Boy Slim's rubbery funk only underscores Eve's lyrical weaknesses. Also iffy is "Getting Aggressive," which reduces Mystikal to background noise underneath Moby's intrusive onslaught of rhythm. Better balance is found on Mos Def and Massive Attack's intense cover of Bad Brains' "I Against I"; a ghetto-fab but gritty partnership between Jadakiss, Fabolous, and Danny Saber; and Gorillaz and Redman's giddy "Gorillaz on My Mind." Credit everyone involved for delivering a soundtrack album that is much more than tie-in product. --Amy Linden (Amazon.com)

    6. Dig This Vibe - DJ Krush
    7. Dealing With the Roster - Junkie XL

The Blade soundtrack matches up with expectations for the film pretty well: there are a few artists who have done some consistently good work, most of whom seem to be slumming it here (KRS-One, Gang Starr); there are a couple trying to change their image and prove that they can be relevant in another context (New Order); there's a completely unexpected appearance by someone you'd completely forgotten about (Mantronik); and there are plenty of forgettable turns by wannabes, could-bes, and should-bes (Mystikal, Kasino, P.A.). The album finally picks up toward the end, with Mantronik's club-hopping EPMD remix, New Order's techno turn, Expansion Union's dance track, and DJ Krush's lounge vibe. --Randy Silver (amazon.com)

Quentin Tarantino's trash-talking original soundtrack is fuelled by a greasy Tex-Mex theme. Starting with the Blasters classic "Dark Night," this album rumbles like a gang of renegade vampire bikers through a sharp new one from ZZ Top ("She's Just Killing Me"), a classy Jimmy Vaughan blooze ("Dengue Woman Blues"), an outrageous vignette by Cheech Marin, a couple of vintage Stevie Ray sides, and some rockin' Tejano tornados from Tito Larriva. --Jeff Bateman (amazon.com)
