The non-anamorphic DVD suffers from inconsistent and oversaturated fleshtones, and an overall brightly lit appearance. Fleshtones are subtly more natural; colors are rich and vibrant with deep, solid blacks. Images are sharper with more detail and better resolution for a generally pleasing visual presentation. The picture is matted at 1.66:1. The Dolby® Digital Soundtrack is credited as a Dolby Surround matrix encoding, but the signal is stereo-only with dialogue spread to the two channels. The overall fidelity sounds thin and bright.

Viewed through the component video output, the anamorphically enhanced, THX® digitally mastered DVD exhibits colors that are rich and nicely balanced. Depth and definition are impressive, with fine details and clarity nicely rendered. Some scenes have a slightly harsh appearance, and occasionally, enhanced edges are noticed. Film grain and artifacts are apparent throughout, but the transfer is nicely done for a picture that should not disappoint fans. A direct comparison to the LaserDisc is recommended to see the excellent visual improvements on this disc. The anamorphic and letterbox aspect ratio measures a windowboxed 1.66:1. The Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel discrete soundtrack is a remastering effort, which updates the original matrix soundtrack. The Chace Digital Stereo™ processing for the re-purposed audio adds specific .1 LFE effects, and a soundfield that is generally confined to the screen channels. Fidelity is appropriately dated, but background noise is not noticeable. The surrounds are most active with the music, and subtly so with sound effects.

Compared to the previously released, non-anamorphic DVD, the anamorphically enhanced 1.85:1 DVD exhibits a darker picture; but contrast is improved. Images are generally sharp with good definition and detail, but some scenes are a bit soft. Colors are dated, but generally well balanced. Though black levels are a few shades deeper than on the previous version, true depth is wanting. Overall it is a mediocre visual experience, though a lot of what makes the picture less-than-impressive originates from the source. Fans will, nonetheless, be delighted with everything about this DVD. The Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel discrete soundtrack is a remastering effort which incorporates dimensional processing as well as (possibly) some of the original elements to give the original monaural audio some life in terms of spaciousness. The results are rather compelling, in that the soundstage is indeed enlivened with occasionally prominent surround engagement, at times even using the split surrounds. However, the audio is ultimately limited by the poor fidelity. Low level background noise also can be noticed throughout. The low-end is appropriately limited, but .1 LFE enhances the low-end.
