The 1.75:1 DVD is not anamorphic and is hazy and wanting in better contrast and shadow delineation. Color fidelity is inconsistent and dated, with generally natural fleshtones, but weak undefined blacks. The overall picture lacks definition and is wanting in natural depth. While there is little noise, artifacts are apparent. The DVD credited Dolby® Digital soundtrack is essentially mono though it has been remastered in Chace Stereo Surround. Enhanced .1 LFE measures on our reference Dorrough six-channel meter bridge indicating that this is a discrete 4.1 mix. Fidelity is poor and overall the sonic character is compressed and distorted. Surround envelopment is at times aggressive, particularly during intense massacre scenes. This is a significant improvement over the monaural theatrical version, which is included on the DVD, resulting in a dramatic sense of terror. |
