The picture quality is outstanding when viewing this anamorphic widescreen DVD through the component video output. This is a study in shadow detail with fine gradiations of shade between the dark areas and picture black. As vampires only expose themselves during darkness, most scenes are dark, but the transfer is beautifully rendered. Fleshtones are naturally rendered and colors are richly hued. There is no apparent chroma noise or other artifacts. The imagery is as haunting as it is stunning. The DVD is framed at 2.32:1, anamorphic and letterbox. The Dolby® Digital discrete 5.1 soundtrack is a bass man's delight! Bass extension is powerful and deep, yet natural sounding. The exciting part is that the deep bass is often effectively directed to the surround channels, even at 25Hz. Enhancement in the .1 LFE channel is deep and effective when combined with the bass in the other channels. The music score is dynamic with an expansive soundstage. Dialogue sounds natural, although ADR-processed at times. Foley effects are well controlled and executed.

Both the anamorphic and letterbox renderings, matted at 1.78:1, exhibit superb picture quality with rich and vibrant colors with natural fleshtones and deep, solid blacks. In the component anamorphic mode, color definition and saturation is first rate as is sharpness and detail. The Dolby® Digital 5.1 discrete soundtrack is the original theatrical six-track printmaster which features sound effects in the split surrounds. While the Dolby Digital sound character is slightly thin and edgy, the overall haunting character of the sound design is sure to please.

The DVD is framed in a slightly cropped 2.15:1 aspect ratio. The DVD is not anamorphic and exhibits similar quality when compared to the previously released, but not reviewed, LaserDisc (Catalog No. 41057). The picture is color, but strangely and presumably employs a stylized effect for an almost a black and white experience. Colors are very subdued, but black levels are generally deep and solid. Both LaserDisc and DVD exhibit noise and artifacts. The DVD exhibits sometimes distracting composite-sourced NTSC artifacts and inter-field jitter. The DVD Dolby® Digital encoded Dolby Surround soundtrack is virtually identical to the LaserDisc matrix PCM soundtrack. Fidelity is dated and sounds compressed. Dialogue is often ADR-processed and wanting in spatial integration, though occasional off-screen dialogue is used. The soundstage is pulled toward center but the music score is wonderful. Scenes that are expected to have surround envelopment collapse to monaural.

The DVD is not anamorphic, but looks incredibly sharp with good resolution. Images reveal nicely rendered detail and texture, though sometimes appearing a bit hazy. Color fidelity is brownish, but occasionally looks natural. Shadow delineation is also naturally rendered, with good contrast. Still, the DVD appears mediocre, and would have been beautiful in the component anamorphic format-if that was an option. Minor noise and artifacts are apparent. The aspect ratio is 2.30:1. The Dolby® Digital coded soundtrack is undistinguished and distorted monaural.
